Senator Larry Craig from Idaho got busted in a men's room for making "gay signals" toward an undercover police officer in the next stall.

The charge: lewd behavior.  But, he wound up pleading guilty to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct.

I'm confused.

If you get arrested for one thing, how come the system is so easily open to letting you downsize the charge?  If the cops are so hot to get you to cop a plea then take advantage of it.

Seems to me if it's open to negotiation, the guy getting arrested should drive a harder bargain!

The Senator should have agreed to plead guilty only IF the police department had agreed to NEVER to release the audio tape of his interrogation.  No audio, no details, no interest.

Nobody would have cared about the disorderly conduct charge.

The Senator could have just lied to the press and said the disorderly conduct charge came about after he got into a fist fight over the last half 'n' half at a Starbucks or something.

Nobody would have been the wiser and Senator Craig would have been standing up in front of the press insisting, "I am not a milk user. I have never been a milk user."
