Feds Bust Another Dangerous...uh...Word.
This week the government scored a big one in the War on Drugs. It busted an energy drink named "Cocaine".
The Feds, through the FDA, coerced Redux Beverages to take "Cocaine" off the shelves by inferring if it didn't it would most likely wind up in court and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on legal fees. The FDA claimed Redux was marketing the product illegally by promoting it as a drug alternative and a dietary supplement.
"Cocaine" had no cocaine in it. It had 280 milligrams of caffeine per 8.2 oz. serving - less than espresso by volume. A 6 oz. cup of drip coffee has 175 milligrams. A 44 oz. cup of Coke or Pepsi has about 160 milligrams. Maximum strength No Doz has 200 milligrams per pill.
My point is: if somebody wanted to wig-out on caffeine, there are plenty of sources to find this legal drug. The Feds just didn't like a drink called "Cocaine" because let's face it: it could have been a gateway drink to other dangerous things that sound like drugs but aren't like: POT generally found in kitchens, HORSE (heroin) found in pastures, ECSTASY felt during sex and any number of things with names that have duplicate meanings.
So, I hope everyone feels safer today now that Cocaine, the drink, is gone. Oddly enough, Coca-Cola - the nation's most popular soft drink - actually did have cocaine in it when first created back in the late 1800s. It only became completely cocaine-free in 1929.
No wonder the country went into a Great Depression that year!
